If That High World
by George Gordon, Lord Byron

(From Hebrew Melodies - 1815)

    1
  1.   If that high world—which lies beyond
  2.      Our own, surviving love endears;
  3.   If there the cherished heart be fond,
  4.      The eye the same—except in tears—
  5.   How welcome those untrodden spheres!
  6.      How sweet this very hour to die!
  7.   To soar from earth and find all fears
  8.      Lost in thy light—eternity!

    2
  9.   It must be so—’tis not for self
  10.      That we so tremble on the brink,
  11.   And striving to o’erleap the gulph,
  12.      Yet cling to Being’s breaking link.
  13.   Oh! in that future let us think
  14.      To hold each heart the heart that shares;
  15.   With them the immortal waters drink,
  16.      And soul in soul grow deathless theirs!
